  • Keep receipts for temporary housing.

The first day

  1. 1

    Get clearance

Ask the fire department when it's safe to enter.

  2. 2

    Find shelter

Your insurer or the Red Cross can help.

  3. 3

    Call your insurer

Report the fire and ask what they need.

  4. 4

    Secure the home

    Arrange board-up and tarps.

  5. 5

    Document

Photograph every room before anything moves.

  6. 6

    Call a contractor

Ask about soot, water and odor.

Things not to do

  • Do not switch on power or gas
  • Do not wipe soot from walls
  • Do not eat food exposed to heat or smoke
  • Do not throw out items before listing them

Getting your papers back in order

Replace IDs, policies and bank cards as soon as you can, and keep a folder for the fire report, receipts and claim notes. Ask the fire department how to get a copy of the report, since your insurer will usually want it. Take care of yourself too. Losing a home is a shock, and it's fine to ask for support.
